TEACHING IDEAS


Our CVC Emergent Readers eBooks are the first set in our series of eBooks, and a valuable teaching tool in the first stages of your children’s reading development. Our beginning readers eBooks are arranged according to your children’s natural reading progression, establishing the foundation for early readers. Our young readers eBooks are a powerful educational resource for children who are learning how to read, children who are being home schooled, and children who are learning English as a second language. Our resourceful teaching ideas are a supplemental educational aid for both parents and teachers; we also welcome you to share your own inspirations by emailing them to info@shalabooks.com.

Questioning

Ask children questions before, during and after reading. Here are some examples:

  • What was your favorite picture? Why?
  • What was your favorite word? Why?
  • Can you find all the words that start with the letter ... ?
  • What is the common ending of all the words in the eBook?
  • Can you find all the words that end with the letter/letters ... ?
  • What letter does the word start with?
  • What letter(s) does the word end with?
  • Can you sound out all the letters in the word?

Picture Walk

Before reading the eBook, have children look at the pictures and talk about them.


 

Rhyming

Have children come up with additional words that rhyme with the ones in the eBook. The words can be real or nonsense!

                 

Reading Buddies

Have children read the eBooks to siblings, to friends or to other students at school during reading buddies. Being able to read one or two words per page is a great accomplishment for young learners. By sharing their abilities with others, it builds confidence and gives them a sense of pride!

 

Writing

Free apps and software such as Page Marker, Web Paint and Microsoft Edge will allow you to draw on the eBooks while open in a web browser. Some writing activities include:

a) Have children write a sentence or sentences  using the word(s) on the page.

b) In "presentation" mode, you can show the    word(s) without revealing the picture. Ask children to illustrate what they think the word or words mean.

c) In "presentation" mode, scroll backwards so that the picture is revealed first. Ask children to try and spell the word(s) for the picture. This can be done independently as children will be able to self-correct.

d) Printing Practice - Have children trace the letters with a computer pen or their finger.

e) Ask children to circle certain initial letters or word endings.

f) Structured Word Inquiry - If you are using this as a teaching method, you can choose a word in an eBook as a base. Vocabulary webs can be drawn on the eBook itself.

g) Have children write words that rhyme with the one on the page.

h) White out a portion of a word. See if the children can fill in the missing letter(s).
